What Motivates You?
Ok, I’m gonna be blunt here for a moment. Listen up if you’re overweight. I think some of you have been pretty silent the last few weeks and I’d like to see that change.
What motivates you to be fat?
I’m going to assume you’re fat because you chose to be, not because you were made that way. Why do you eat so much, or not exercise regularly? What is causing you to make bad decisions? (And yes, you are making bad decisions.)
My motivation to be fat came from my obsession with food. I love to eat and, when I do, I overdo it. I also used Asthma for a long time to convince myself I couldn’t exercise. I never wanted to be fat, but I was never motivated to not be fat. If you’re overweight and you’re not doing something about it, then you’re just telling everyone you want to be that way.
What motivates you to lose weight?
Clearly, not enough. Maybe you’ve tried… but why have you failed? Addicted to food? Lazy? Not enough support?
In a moment of divine clarity (or perhaps insanity) I started this blog. I had re-gained almost 15 pounds since I lost motivation last summer. What the fuck? I was doing so well. I realized I needed people to support me (thanks guys!) and put everything I do under scrutiny. I needed to talk about what bothers me, what drove me to eat myself sick, and why I couldn’t take two flights of stairs or walk a mile without getting winded.
My point
I want you guys to get vocal. Comment on this post or on facebook, like it, email me, anything. If you’re overweight and you want help, I want to help. I don’t care who you are… you can make a change. But it’s taking that initial leap, that moment of clarity to actually push yourself to start. Why not start right now?

Just because I’ve felt like crying all day long, and this made me laugh.

Oh, Sookie.

Holy deliciousness.

Turkey burger at lunch in the work caf = AWEOSOME. Chef Bruce totally kicked it into high gear, and made turkey burgers with feta (random. delicious!) and lots of fresh herbs.

FOR REAL. TRY IT AT HOME. So moist, so delicious, so freaking awesome.

Um, yum. Am going to make and freeze.

More Reason for High Protein Diet: Bone Health

smarthealth:

RECENT FINDINGS: Increased potential renal acid load resulting from a high protein (intake above the current Recommended Dietary Allowance of 0.8 g protein/kg body weight) intake has been closely associated with increased urinary calcium excretion. However, recent findings do not support the assumption that bone is lost to provide the extra calcium found in urine. Neither whole body calcium balance is, nor are bone status indicators, negatively affected by the increased acid load. Contrary to the supposed detrimental effect of protein, the majority of epidemiological studies have shown that long-term high-protein intake increases bone mineral density and reduces bone fracture incidence. The beneficial effects of protein such as increasing intestinal calcium absorption and circulating IGF-I whereas lowering serum parathyroid hormone sufficiently offset any negative effects of the acid load of protein on bone health.

SUMMARY: On the basis of recent findings, consuming protein (including that from meat) higher than current Recommended Dietary Allowance for protein is beneficial to calcium utilization and bone health, especially in the elderly. A high-protein diet with adequate calcium and fruits and vegetables is important for bone health and osteoporosis prevention.

-Cao JJ, Nielsen FH.  Acid diet (high-meat protein) effects on calcium metabolism and bone health. Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care. 2010 Aug 16. [Epub ahead of print]

Helps to build muscle, helps to burn fat, and now we can throw “promotes bone health and prevents osteoporosis” on the list.

FOR REAL. This is but one of the reasons I work out. I have ALWAYS loved me a cute bra. And once you get past a C cup, the construction of bras changes. They’re not so delicate, not quite as cute (for the mid-range price options, at least). Also, there tend to be less choices if you don’t fit into conventional bra sizes. So this here is but one of the reasons I work out.
Cheaper, more awesome lingerie.
I’ll admit it.
